We've been making bikes shift better since 1989 - AFM, AMA, WERA, CCS, AU, UK, DE and OZ orgs, too.
If you were to spot check the current entry field at an AMA Pro event, you'd find that a decent percentage of the bikes that are reputed to "shift well" when they were stock (according the the magazines) are further upgraded with our parts and pieces to further improve shifting to critical performance levels.
 

Missed shifts - False neutrals between the upper gears.
Notchy shifting.
Quick downshifts cack up and take concentration.
No "feel" in the shifting.
Takes not enough pressure and feels flaccid - or - with "trick mods"  takes too much pressure and still doesn't shift quickly.

With this kit, this transmission should complete shifts in 40-45ms instead of  60-65ms.
And miss fewer shifts.

For reference:
Type of oil used is a 5% difference in shifting.
A shift shaft support  arm is a 5% difference in shifting.
The new Factory Pro Shift Star is a 90% improvement in shifting.
In other words, with the Shift Star kit, you can use any oil and have or have not a shift support arm and have awesome shifting.


The 1190/1290 is a high end production engine and needs dedicated, specialized R&D to improve the shifting to competition levels.  Even with KTM's gearbox updates, the transmission is, improvable.

The stock KTM and KTM "race" shift star is made of aluminum - not the hardest material and not what we'd want - We use heat treated tool steel for the absolute minimum of rolling resistance and the most secure shifts.

If you have an  RC8 or RC8R, tried the "tweaks" and still the shifting is holding back the track performance, Factory Pro is available to help.

RC8/1190/1290 Shift Star Kit Feedback

        Hi, Last year during my summer holiday in Palm Desert,  I ordered 2 sets of Shift Star kit and took them back to Belgium with me. They work very well on the KTM RC8's.  VERY satisfied J

I would like to place an order for 2 more kits....  Would you be able to deliver to Sioux Falls by latest Wednesday (17th of September) night (working there at the moment) as I will return to Europe on Thursday.  I understand that this may involve overnight courier at some cost but that is not a problem.  I will also call you later today (your office time 09.00AM) to see what is/was possible.

       So, what difference does the Factory pro part make? Easier upshifts! Noticeably less drivetrain shunt when going up the gears. The effort to shift gear is about the same but the engagement is very different. Obviously it's early days and I'm still getting used to it but it's all good so far and is a big improvement so I'm very happy we took the job on

Trackday bike tuning (track only)

The 1290 SDs are variable - some run fairly smoothly and some surge a bit and many are super abrupt on the on / off / barely on throttle operation - kind of like what you don't want in town on a big, strong, torquey bike. Many  SD's are not as enjoyable as they could be to ride in town or on a twisty road.

Proper tuning fuel, ignition, crossover tables, device activation tables will smooth out the lowend and improve power delivery linearity to make the bike sweet and nice to ride. (and 'oh darn", will make more peak hp, too  :-)

Wheelsmith / Factory uses the EC997 dyno - with Realtime HP and torque readout and a4/ 5 gas Exhaust Analyzer - and that's why results are likely to be better than a dealership level dyno that only "tunes to an air-fuel ratio" (as if there is some magic afr).

I've heard reports in MotorcycleUSA.com that common dealership level dynos can take "120 dyno runs to tune" a KTM. That's abusive to your bike. It's fine for a magazine test bike, but not yours.

The Factory Pro EC997 and its 4/5 gas exhaust gas analyzer derive loads more tuning information per dyno run - providing the most tuning information in less "engine runtime" -  6-10 runs would be max engine runtime.

Wheelsmith has been tuning efi KTMs since the first 990's came out - and tuning KTM twins for years in fact, the 950 jetting kit that Factory Pro / Wheelsmith developed is the best performing 950 jet kit available to this very day.

Seemed to have more down at the bottom, didn't rev it out too high, yet.

The extension of the laboratory for engines of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was completed in about 1935. Its architect was Rudolf Otto Salvisberg (1882-1940). He had a successful career in Berlin but returned to Switzerland after the advent of the Nazis. His architectural style was somewhat similar to that of Erich Mendelsohn. The staircase of the laboratory is in normal use but well preserved.
